Hands-on Natural Soapmaking Workshop

Learn the basics of natural soapmaking while utilizing dairy and fats from your homestead. In this hands-on workshop, you will be confident in making natural soaps for your family in the comfort of your home. This journey will allow you to leave behind synthetic ingredients, artificial fragrances and colors, and synthetic preservatives.

In this workshop

In this three-and-a-half-hour workshop, you will gain the knowledge and confidence to make natural soaps in the comfort of your home. Providing your family with a more natural option ensures your family’s skin is free from unnatural colorants, chemicals, and preservatives. Individuals who attend this hands-on natural soapmaking workshop will:

  • Receive an overview of the of the natural soapmaking process
  • Learn safety protocol and procedures
  • Know what materials are needed for soapmaking at home
  • Utilize home-grown plants and animal matter from your homestead to make all-natural soaps
  • How to scent your soaps

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Make a loaf of your very own handmade soap, approximately 7 bars of soap ($56 value)
  • Take home a reusable, heavy-duty silicone soap mold and cutter. ($15 value)
  • Enjoy a sample pre-cured soap bar ($5 value)
  • Gain the confidence and skill to make soap at home safely. (Invaluable)
  • Practice with a beginner soap recipe
  • Gather necessary soapmaking materials and supplies with a supply list designed for beginners

Attendees are required to bring the following:

  • A shoebox size container to transport your soap home
  • Eye protection (any clear eyeglasses OR protective goggles)

Homemade soap is superior because it is made with clean, natural, high-quality ingredients. The soap you make will be customizable to suit what is grown on your homestead and can be formulated for your particular skincare needs.  Incorporating dairy into your soap is highly beneficial, as it provides natural lactic acid, milk fats, selenium, and moisture, which is key in maintaining your body’s natural pH for sensitive skin.

Meet your instructors

Wendy and Karlyn Hartman, a mother-daughter duo, are the driving force behind Adoratio Farms, a goat milk soap company and family goat farm in Central Virginia. Adoratio Farms specializes in all-natural goat milk soap, bath and body products, and registered mini Nubian goats. Their farm also provides pastured poultry, eggs, and other sustainable products for its community.

In addition to being small family farms and entrepreneurs, Wendy and Karlyn coauthored the book Soaping Clean with Dairy from the Homestead, which is scheduled to be released in October 2025. In 2025, Wendy and Karlyn have spoken at conferences such as the Homesteaders of America Conference in Front Royal, Virginia, and the Homestead United Jamboree in Fletcher, North Carolina.
